About Me
My Background
I have had many different careers in my life within the Art and fashion industries, and taught Visual Arts, Photography and Ceramics for nearly 21 years before resigning in 2014 to begin my business: Karen Scott Murals. I paint custom pet portraits paintings, wall murals, pet portraiture on stones, and refurbished vintage saws. I also sculpt pets, and make quirky teapots, planters, canisters and Christmas Tree decorations based on your pet photos!
I feel so blessed to be able to do something I am passionate about and to run my own business – something very few people get to experience!
My Medium
I use many different mediums, such as polymer clay, acrylics, watercolour and pencil. I specialise in what I like to call “stylised realism” in my depiction of animals and landscape in murals, which give them a quirky and unique character. But my pet portraiture is based on the realistic depiction of much loved pets painted from clients photographs. I specialise in Acrylics on canvas, but also paint onto pet stones, vintage saws and I sculpt pets in polymer clay as well.
My Inspiration
As a mother of two, to my Dalmatians Sophie and Tilly, I am definitely inspired by my love for dogs and all other animals. I live in the beautiful Martinsville valley in Lake Macquarie, NSW, right at the foot of the Watagan Mountains NP in a wonderful timber pole home built by my husband and myself. It is just the most serene setting and every day I see a parade of wildlife passing by my house, or making themselves quite at home in my hillside garden! How can I not be inspired by such an idyllic setting?
EDIT: My dear Sophie passed at age 13.5 years on 13th March 2024 and is missed terribly. But her little sister Tilly carries on in her footsteps and continues to inspire my work and brighten my days!
